Girls Voices

The Adolescent Girls Project.

The project provides essential empowerment training for adolescent girls as a stepping stone to leadership. We encourage rural girls to stay and succeed in school, address girls’ health and well-being, and foster girls’ agency and confidence to help them pursue their dreams

Adolescent Girls Vulnerability

In Numbers

  • Period Poverty: School-going girls lack access to sanitary products, leading to

absenteeism and dropouts (Menstrual Hygiene Day, 2021).

  • High Dropout Rates: 1 in 4 girls does not finish high school, limiting prospects

(Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, 2021).

  •  Early Pregnancy: 3 in 10 girls become pregnant before age 20, causing school

dropouts and perpetuating poverty (Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, 2021).

  • Sexual Violence: 1 in 3 girls experiences sexual violence before age 18, impacting

well-being (World Health Organization, 2021).

  • Body Image Issues: 78% of girls are unhappy with their bodies by age 17,

influenced by family, peers, and media (Plan International, 2020).

  •  Lack of Leadership Representation: Girls are underrepresented in leadership roles, limiting their influence and advocacy (UN Women, 2020).

Our Why

Adolescents (ages 10–14) undergo rapid changes that increase their risks. Since 2021, 100% of girls served by Wounded Healers reported challenges related to menstrual hygiene, sexual assault, and early pregnancy (WHF, 2023).

OUR APPROACH

Girls Mentorship Clubs

In these clubs, girls have the opportunity to engage in various activities and workshops aimed at developing leadership qualities such as communication, teamwork, decision-making, and problem-solving. Through hands-on experiences and group projects, they learn to take initiative, advocate for themselves and others, and become agents of positive change in their communities.

Girls Soccer Teams

We strongly encourage adolescent girls to participate in sports activities within our community to challenge cultural norms. Girls' soccer teams promote gender equality by granting equal access to sports, empowering girls, fostering leadership skills, increasing the visibility of women's sports, advocating for equal treatment, promoting community engagement and social change, and paving the way for greater gender equality in sports and society.

Girls Education Sholarships

At Wounded Healers, we strongly believe that education can play a crucial role in preventing sexual abuse and re-victimization. That's why we have established a scholarship program that aims to provide educational opportunities to young women who are vulnerable to sexual violence.

The scholarship covers school fees, uniforms, textbooks, and other essential educational materials, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder the girls' ability to attend and thrive in school. Beneficiaries of the scholarship receive ongoing mentorship from experienced educators and mentors. This support helps them navigate academic challenges, build confidence, and develop life skills that are crucial for their personal and professional growth.
