The Daycare is a nurturing space created for the babies of young mothers living in the shelter and those attending classes at the Learning Center. It provides a safe, caring environment for up to 20 babies, giving mothers the freedom to concentrate fully on their education, use the library, and access computers and training resources. This essential support allows them to study, learn new skills, and build confidence while knowing their children are nearby and cared for with love.
Throughout the day, the space is filled with warmth and life—you’ll hear soft laughter, playful giggles, songs, and the gentle hum of babies sharing snacks together. Guided by caregivers, the children engage in storytelling, play, and early development activities that encourage social and emotional growth. Each moment in the daycare is designed to nurture both joy and security, creating a foundation for lifelong learning.
More than a childcare service, the Daycare gives mothers precious time to rest, reflect, and care for themselves while knowing their babies are safe and loved. It offers moments of calm and renewal—an opportunity to take a breath, gather strength, and focus on healing. This space strengthens both mother and child, offering the comfort, stability, and sense of belonging that every family deserves.
The Daycare is sustained through the generosity of the Portland Friends Meeting, the Evelyn S. and K.E. Barrett Foundation, and compassionate community members who believe in supporting mothers as they rebuild their lives. Together, we are nurturing a generation of young women and children who can learn, grow, and dream again.
